Ancient Japanese legend tells of a battle between a brave warrior, Raiko, and a gigantic spider demon, Tsuchigumo. Raiko killed the demon by splitting her belly open. However, thousands of large red spiders spilled forth from the bloody wound and crawled off into the corners of the earth.
